“I was a typical consumer for my product when I came up with the idea for eyeSlices (the first of our range). If I had a good cry my eyes would puff up for days.
Raw ice, teabags and cucumber slices made no difference and there was very little on the market at that stage back in 1999 to treat lifestyle induced symptoms. You got the little material masks that dried out quickly, slip off your face and didn’t really work. I thought to myself, surely it can’t be rocket science to develop a product that really works?” says Kerryne.
When this South African born innovator started working on the development of the product range, her goal was to use technology to create something that really worked and to differentiate her range from everything else in the market.
She turned her home into a science lab back in 2000 after licensing the initial R&D – a simple laboratory experiment at that point. She became the scientist, cooking up the polymer gel in a slow cooker and conducting hundreds of experiments until she figured out the technology, but it still had a long way to go.
Then began the engineering of a manufacturing process for the technology that could give the products a 2 year shelf life as well as being able to produce high volumes. With the help of her business partner, Toby and thinking laterally to find solutions in the food industry, the engineering of a factory began.
Years of surmounting obstacles, customising machinery and automating the production process , has resulted in the commercialisation of a world class range of unique products manufactured in a globally unique CyroGel manufacturing facility.
7 Years of initial research by the CSIR, and subsequent further 10 years of development, trials and testing in-house, have resulted in the achievement of her goal.
The company has been a recipient of numerous awards and has exported various products around the world since 2007.
